Please help me write a letter?

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

I am acting as a Civil War Women. Her name is Mary Ann Bickerdyke. She was a nurse during the civil war and did a lot of good things. When I act like her I want to read aloud a letter she had received.

It is going to be from U. S. Grant, and he is going to show his admiration towards her work, because he really did really admire everything she did, but there aren’t any letters saying that.

So could you please write a letter, or give me some ideas. Thanks!

Rate this poem commentary pls out of 10 and also giv extra comments if you want tank u!!
This poem is about a young writer who is thinking back to his family and to what two generations of his family did. They were farmers and planted potatoes and therefore digged a lot. The son of the farmer thinks back to the tradition and that he has tried something different as a career which has a more respectable reputation. The son also feels guilty for becoming a writer and breaking the tradition but at the end of the poem he accepts his work and he is proud of his family background.

There are some themes in this poem, one is migration; from the farming country area to urbanization, because writers normally don’t live in the countryside and also moving from one place to another. This theme includes change because migration is changing the place where the person stays and where the person lives changes many things, especially if the areas are very different, culturally and physically. Another theme is family tradition; a family tradition is normally continued down the line of the family but here the man talks about how the family tradition was broken by him. The dad and grandfather show that there was the family tradition of digging, farming potatoes. Another Theme is also admiration, because the man looks up to what his grandfather and father did and how much they worked. Admiration is then linked also to pride of the family and this basically means that the man is proud of what his family did and that they were the best.
This poem uses many types of language, also symbolism and creates images for the readers with certain language. The simile used at the beginning of the poem, “The Squat pen rests; as snug as a gun” this means that the pen lies comfortably in his hand like it is made to stay in his hand like a gun but this is also a bit disturbing because he compares it to a gun which in this case might symbolize taking action so starting to write and taking action of what he is doing. A metaphor in the poem is at the end of the poem, “The Squat pen rests. I’ll dig with it.” This is used in the poem to show that the son has changed the tradition but that his pen symbolizes his fathers spade. Personification is also found in this poem, “Through living roots awaken in my head” roots can’t really awake so I think he uses this personification to describe well how he is feeling, that he is experiencing nostalgia; the roots represent old memories and thoughts. There is also three examples of alliteration in the poem, when the poet is describing the father digging, “Under my window, a clean rasping sound when the spade sinks into gravely ground: My father, digging” this is used to describe the sentence further and uses alliteration to make the sentence be more expressive. The other alliteration in the poem is, “…the squelch and slap.” This alliteration is also used to describe and inform the readers the actions happening. The language in the poem also appeals to the readers’ five senses in many parts of the poem, “The cold smell of potato mold,” Also feeling of the spades, “Loving their cool hardness in our hands.” So this poem uses very descriptive language and makes the readers imagine the situation and includes all the senses and some colors to help the readers picture everything.

This poem is told by the son of the farmer who tells the readers of his family’s past and what he wants to do in his future and he includes his father and grandfather both potato farmers. The poem is set in the past on a farm house in Toners Bog, the readers know this because of the following lines in the poem, ”Under my window…” this tells us that there is a house and, “Than any other man on Toner’s Bog.” So Toners Bog is where they farm and probably live because the house is where they live. The son of the farmer is a writer and his experience in life is that of farming because he experienced it with his family but now he is writing for his career. The son is describing in the poem the daily life of a farmer, the tradition of his family, the expectation of his family from him and that he is not following them by becoming a writer.
This poem starts with the present with the son writing at his desk but then goes onto referring to the past by talking about his father. Then in the sixth line the poem goes even further in the past to the grandfather. So during the poem there is a sign of reflection and nostalgia going twenty years back to the grandfather and then the poem end in the present with the son writing.

During the poem the author praises his family tradition and that he looked up to his grandfather even although farming is not seen as a job that is very intellectual or high status, even though it doesn’t make money. And even thought farming is not looked up to he still admires the family tradition because they did lots of manual labor for survival of their family. During the poem the author lets the readers know that maybe because he changed the family tradition he is not good enough. But later on in the poem near the end the poem:
“Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests
I’ll dig with it”
Here the poet is expressing that his father digs physically and even thought he does not farm he will dig mentally with his brain using his pen to write it down.

The tone of the poem is autobiographical; which is referring to the past as a type of dream tone. The tone is also sad because the son is guilty for not following the family tradition, this could even be a tone of feeling inferior to his family’s past,” But I’ve no spade to follow men like them”. This later on becomes a proud tone when he talks about his grandfather and even his father this can also be a loving tone towards his family,
“By God the old man could handle a spade,
Just like his old man.
My grandfather could cut more turf in a day
That any other man on Toner’s Bog”
He also brags in this part of the poem on how good his grandfather was at his job and this makes him realize how proud he actually is. There is also a lot of a nostalgic tone because he is referring back and remembering the past. But at the end of the poem the atmosphere is of acceptance and resolution; he accepts what he does and what his family did.

This poem is very descriptive and the tone varies. There are only three characters. It is a poem describing periods of time of this person: an autobiographical poem which has three time periods each for each character and different themes throughout the poem. So the whole poem is descriptive and well structured.

When the people you love hurt you?

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

I have a good friendship with my ex-husband and I care very deeply for him. We share one wonderful son and both of us are great parents. His opinion weighs heavy with me and I think the admiration is mutual…. until a problem arises. He has the ability to accelerate my heart rate, raise my blood pressure and cause all kinds of anxiety symptoms. We are going through some very stressful times right now: my son has three broken bones in his right leg), legal issues in regards to me and other things that are “distrupting” my ex’s schedule. The problem is every time I talk to my ex I am brought to tears and horrible high stress levels. I hate to say I shouldn’t talk with him but I can’t keep feeling this way. It’s far too much of a roller coaster emotionally for me but obviously we need to communicate. What should I do????

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

This friend of mine is such a freakin drama queen. He ‘overly exaggerates about the positive and negative situations, he is ultra high on himself, very controlling and manipulative. There have been time when I litterately wanted to “Bitchh slap the shhit out of him. He makes up stories about where he’s been or what he’s got to do…..I’ve told him that I know what he is doing and that he does not need to make up stories to feel important and to gain people admiration. I want to drop him but we’ve been friends for awhile. what should I do and WHY the hell is he keep acting like this????

the move of a girl in a guy?

Friday, July 10th, 2009

in dating, typically a guy is motivated to IMPRESS his crush girl to seek attention and admiration from her.

1. how about in the girls’ side of motivation when she sees a potential guy for a date?

2. if a guy is on “impressing”, what would be a typical “girl’s way” catching the attention of her guy?

3. if your answer is flirting, why? please explain the reason behind it.

4. to the girls: also is there other than flirting that might catch your “crush” attention to you?

i see you are ever so fixated on my questions.
i understand your facsination with me.
its the deep love and admiration you have for zidane-yet your persistent denial of it manifests itself as a rabid hatred for any french fun.
to be honest,it is you who is burning from the bile in your gut.
take it easy boy.
days are ticking by-and the humiliation in rome draws ever so closer…
refering to my previous questions,i have answered to your claims of me as a racist..and have exposed your ignorance to victims of HIV and their plight.
God forgive you for what you said about them.
anyway i could choose to block you but instead i gave you the option of thinking deeper..of wisening up.
